Myths and Misconceptions About LASIK Surgery

July 29, 2009 @ 10:01 PM — by unknown

Have you wondered about laser eye surgery, but shied away from the procedure because of some of the rumors floating around? Maybe you’ve heard that LASIK isn’t real surgery. For the sake of your vision, let’s put those LASIK myths to rest once and for all.

Misconception #1: LASIK is dangerous and will make you go blind

The Truth: Scientists have been studying the effects of LASIK laser eye surgery since 1987. They’ve found that the procedure is wildly successful when performed on suitable candidates. Most LASIK patients can attain 20/40 vision after the surgery, and more than half of all patients come away with perfect vision. LASIK’s side effects can cause temporary discomfit, but they are not harmful. Only in very rare circumstances has LASIK caused irreversible vision loss.

Misconception #2: You should choose a LASIK surgeon based on price

The Truth: That’s sort of true, but not in the way you’d think. Price should play a role in your final decision, but you should look for surgeons who charge a reasonable price for their service. Some skilled LASIK eye surgeons will do the surgery for a bit less than others, but you should never go to a bargain-basement vision center for your surgery. Very low prices could be a sign of inexperience or ineptitude.

Misconception #3: Anyone can have LASIK

The Truth: If you’re pregnant, or if you’re younger than 18, you’re not a suitable candidate for LASIK. Certain conditions and diseases of the eye will also disqualify you from the procedure. If your eyes are injured or infected, you’ll need to wait until you’re fully healed. If you participate in contact sports, you should consult an eye doctor to find out if LASIK is right for you.

Misconception #4: LASIK isn’t real surgery

The Truth: Yes it is. LASIK is a complete surgical procedure that includes a pre-surgical exam and a post-surgery recovery period. While side effects are typically mild and temporary, there is always the chance of infection or injury if you don’t follow the doctor’s post-operative instructions. By taking your recovery seriously, you’ll ensure a positive LASIK experience.
