Over-Exposure to UV Radiation Can Cause Some Nasty Eye Conditions! By Andrew J. Biondo, OD on June 19, 2012

As with our skin, any exposure to sunlight adds to the cumulative effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation on your eyes.  UV exposure has been linked to eye disorders such as cataract development, eyelid cancers, macular degeneration and more!

Cataract

A cataract is a darkening or opacification of the crystalline lens inside of the eye.  Symptoms of cataract include gradually decreased vision and increased glare, especially at night. With advancement in intraocular lenses, namely multi-focal implants, patients are now able to see clearly at all distances--distance, intermediate and everything in between!

Eyelid Cancers

Melanoma, Basal Cell Carcinoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Sebaceous Cell Carcinoma have all been linked to UV damage.  You can protect your eyes and your vision by wearing sunscreen and sunglasses with 100% UVA and UVB protection!  Wrap-around sunglasses provide even more protection.

Macular Degeneration  (AMD)

AMD is an age related condition that results from genetics, aging and environmental factors such as insult from ultraviolet light.  This disease robs the patient of the central vision, making many everyday tasks difficult or impossible.  To find out the risk factors associated with AMD, click on the link above!

Photokeratitis

This can be likened to sunburn on the cornea.  It is caused by UVB light and is commonly seen in welders and skiers/snowboarders.  Using a tanning bed without proper eye protections can also lead to this painful condition.  Be sure to remember your sun gear even on cloudy days!

Pterygium

A pterygium is an extension of conjunctival tissue (the clear skin layer that covers the white part of the eye) onto the cornea.  This occurs as a response to a lifetime of repeated exposure of the cornea to ultraviolet radiation, and requires surgery to correct.
