Mulqueeny Eye Centers

ONIT Dry Eye Research Study

DRY EYE RESEARCH STUDY

Mulqueeny Eye Centers is conducting a research study for people with dry eye disease.  The purpose of this research study is to better understand the role that Omega 3 supplements play in regulating tear osmolarity (quality of tear film) in patients with established findings consistent with dry eye.

Secondly, this study will attempt to discover if any other diagnostic testing is affected in a positive and predictive manner by adding an Omega 3 supplement, namely EZ Tears®, as a therapeutic agent.

To be eligible for this research study, you must

  • Be at least male/female age 18 -79 years old
  • Have dry eye disease and/or dry eye symptoms
  • Have moderate to severe eye surface discomfort and symptoms of unhealthy tears
  • Be willing to attend 4 study visits over a period of 8 weeks
  • NOT have significant eyelid deformity or eyelid movement disorder
  • NOT have history of previous ocular disease requiring current topical eye therapy
  • NOT have a history of herpes keratitis, varizella zoster, allergic conjunctivitis or other active corneal or conjunctival infection of the eye and/or ocular scarring
  • NOT use or plan to use cyclosporine, any topical eyedrops including glaucoma medications, oral tetracyclines, oral nutraceuticals such as flax, fish, black currant seed oils, or any other Omega 3 supplements within 3 weeks of baseline visit or during the course of the study other than what is provided by the Study Site.
  • NOT have had cataract surgery, LASIK, LASEK, or PRK procedure within the past 12 months
  • NOT have had punctal cauterization or current punctal plug placement within 30 days of baseline visit
  • NOT taking chronic systemic medications known to affect tear production including antihistamines, antidepressants, diuretics, corticosteroids, etc. within 30 days of baseline visit

If you are eligible for this study, study exam visits at no cost to you and a supply of EZ- Tears®Omega 3 supplements for the duration of the study.  You may receive compensation for your time.

There may be reasons why you would not be eligible to participate, and we will discuss this with you.
